Cabo San Lucas vs San José del Cabo: Which Should You Stay In?

Los Cabos is really two towns joined by a 30-kilometre corridor of beaches and golf courses. They share an airport and a peninsula — and not much else. Choosing the right one is the single biggest decision of your trip, so here's the honest version.

Cabo San Lucas: the energy

This is the Cabo of postcards — the marina, Land's End and the Arch, Médano Beach with its swimmable water and floating bars, sport-fishing boats heading out at dawn, and nightlife that runs late. If your group wants restaurants within walking distance, boats at your doorstep, and a buzz in the evening, stay here.

Best for: groups of friends, bachelor and bachelorette trips, first-timers who want the classics, anyone chartering boats.

San José del Cabo: the soul

Forty minutes up the coast, San José is the quieter, older sibling — a historic centre with a shaded plaza, a mission church, and the gallery district that comes alive during the Thursday-evening Art Walk (November through June). Dinners are slower, streets are calmer, and mornings smell like coffee and pan dulce.

Best for: couples, honeymooners, families with younger kids, food and art lovers, anyone whose ideal evening ends at a candlelit patio rather than a dance floor.

The corridor: the compromise

Between the two towns, the Tourist Corridor holds many of the region's best swimming coves — Chileno and Santa María among them — plus championship golf. Staying here means driving to dinner, but waking up to some of the best sea views in Baja.
