San José del Cabo doesn't perform for visitors. It goes about its life — school kids crossing the plaza, galleries opening late morning, farmers pulling produce into town — and lets you join in. That's exactly its appeal.
The historic centre
Start at Plaza Mijares and the mission church, then drift into the Gallery District. On Thursday evenings from November to June, the Art Walk closes the streets: galleries pour wine, artists appear beside their work, and dinner starts whenever you're ready. It's the best free evening in Los Cabos.
The estuary and the beach
The San José Estuary is a rare thing — a freshwater lagoon meeting the desert coast, sheltering hundreds of bird species. Walk or cycle the trail at sunrise. The long town beach is beautiful for walking and riding, though currents make it a look-don't-swim shore; save swimming for Palmilla or the corridor coves.
Eat like you mean it
San José is the culinary heart of the region. The farm-to-table movement lives in the Ánimas Bajas area, where restaurants grow their own produce and set tables under the trees. In town, look for Baja-Med kitchens pairing local seafood with Mexican technique — and leave one night unplanned for whatever the concierge is excited about that week.
